June 20 Introduction to class

June 21 Print out and Read Chapter 1, My Question, in “What Technology Wants”, https://nebula.wsimg.com/fb88fd2e75ed5e26e53082aab6aa26ee?AccessKeyId=39A2DC689E4CA87C906D&disposition=0&alloworigin=1  Do NOT expect to look at this document in class on a technological device.

Respond to the following, typed, to turn in on Tuesday’s class
  1. How does Kelly define technology?
  2. Write a summary of the chapter.
  3. Evaluate Kelly’s statement: “When computers came around, they seemed almost Amish to me”. (p. 3 of the book)

June 22 Read Postman’s essay in TEchnology, pp. 26-36; “On learning from failure”, p. 220 in Habits. Complete the Postman handout. Meet in computer lab

June 23 2-3 page rough draft of your exploratory essay due

June 27, Read pp. 251-252, Sotomayor and 108-116 On Writing by Formula in Habits, write a one to two paragraph response to each essay.
Exploratory essay is due.

June 28, Read “Our posthuman future”.p. 255-263 in Technology, answer the questions on p. 263 including the paragraph.

June 29, Read “On Working With the Words of Others”, p. 119-126 in Habits of the Creative Mind, Do Practice session two “Reading” with an essay you are using for your evaluation essay. Provide specific examples in your response. You will be using this homework to help you incorporate sources in your own work so make it helpful. Meet in lab

June 30 Rough draft of essay is due (2-3 typed pages)

July 5 Read “Is google Making us Stupid”, p 123 and “Does the Internet Make you Smarter” p134 in Technology. Compare and contrast the two essays on which does a better job of creating a justified belief. Which is more convincing and why? Be detailed and use examples from the book.
July 6 Evaluation is due in folder
After signing up for one of the technology questions in the technology book, do some research. Come to class with a HO that summarizes your findings (including at least two sources and their citations) and be prepared to explain what makes your topic interesting in a discussion format for about 6-8 minutes. I encourage you to make print copies of your research articles so that you can use them in class as source material.

July 7 Read “On Curiosity at Work in the Academy,” p. 241 in Habits. Do “Reading” under Practice Session One on p. 249. Use the essay I asked you to bring or one from the technology book.  Meet in lab

July 11 Select one essay you will use as a source for your Technology essay and do a justified belief rubric with it, running through questions 1-9, being sure to clearly and specifically answer each question.

July 12, 2-3 page rough draft to class

July 13 Technology essay is due, Meet in lab

July 14 Look over the final project assignment. What conversation do you want to join? Select a topic you might want to pursue. Write down at least three questions you might answer for your final project. Write two paragraphs that begin to explore the conversation on the topic citing at least one essay from the Technology book.
