Using Sources

Using Sources
How to extend your own thinking and engage in the ongoing conversation on a topic

  1. Carry on a conversation--use the source as a partner in a dialogue
  2. Object of analysis--analyze something someone else said
  3. Contribute key ideas
  4. Shift the direction of the conversation
  5. Bring in a new perspective that questions the obvious way to think
  6. Display your credentials--I know who the experts are on this topic and I can adeptly convey their ideas in my own words (while citing them, of course)
  7. Summarize the work of others as support or for counter argument
  8. Show how ideas have changed over time
  9. Build on a source
  10. Make something simple, complicated
  11. Explore the complexity of an argument that is usually shown as two-sided (moving beyond for and against)
  12. Show how someone else is wrong

Document, document, document!
