Using Sources
How to extend your own thinking and engage in the ongoing conversation on a topic
- Carry on a conversation--use the source as a partner in a dialogue
- Object of analysis--analyze something someone else said
- Contribute key ideas
- Shift the direction of the conversation
- Bring in a new perspective that questions the obvious way to think
- Display your credentials--I know who the experts are on this topic and I can adeptly convey their ideas in my own words (while citing them, of course)
- Summarize the work of others as support or for counter argument
- Show how ideas have changed over time
- Build on a source
- Make something simple, complicated
- Explore the complexity of an argument that is usually shown as two-sided (moving beyond for and against)
- Show how someone else is wrong
Document, document, document!
